In this workshop, you examine the lifecycle of a KubeVirt VM from provisioning through maintenance and restore:

  • You provision a persistent Linux VM with CDI, a DataVolume, Secret-backed cloud-init, and a verified storage path
  • You assess placement, networking, and permissions through scheduler events, connectivity cases, and a clear RBAC matrix
  • You evaluate maintenance and recovery through a live migration with a recorded interruption, a verified restore, and a bounded GitOps workflow

The exercises leave you with manifests, test matrices, and an operator checklist. These artifacts provide a verifiable starting point for your own pilot project. They are not a finished production architecture.

When your organization reassesses VMware costs and platform dependencies, the workshop shows which VM workloads fit KubeVirt and your Kubernetes operating model:

  • Operate VMs and containers together: You assess Kubernetes APIs, RBAC, and a bounded GitOps workflow for shared platform processes
  • Identify operational boundaries: Networking, storage, migration, and restore tests expose key dependencies
  • Evaluate a pilot with evidence: A fit-or-no-fit decision records suitability and open questions for one Linux workload

Groups of up to 8 participants leave room for architecture questions. In corporate training, existing platform requirements can be included. The training does not replace cost, licensing, or migration advice.

Prerequisites

The training starts with KubeVirt, not with Kubernetes fundamentals.

Required:

  • Confidence using kubectl and Kubernetes YAML
  • An understanding of namespaces, pods, controllers, Services, events, and logs
  • Basic knowledge of CRDs, Operators, and Kubernetes reconciliation
  • An understanding of PVs, PVCs, and StorageClasses
  • Confidence using a Linux shell and SSH, plus basic IP networking knowledge

Helpful, but not required:

  • Basic knowledge of KVM, QEMU, or another hypervisor
  • Experience with Git workflows
  • Experience with NetworkPolicy

Not required:

  • Previous experience with KubeVirt, CDI, virtctl, or OpenShift Virtualization
  • A Kubernetes certification

Day 1: Understand KubeVirt and provision a persistent VM

Running a virtual machine in KubeVirt involves more than one Kubernetes object. You trace a prepared VirtualMachine through its VirtualMachineInstance and virt-launcher Pod to controllers and node components. Owner references, status, and events reveal which component owns each decision. The resulting object map lets you explain reconciliation and locate likely failure points.

VirtualMachine and VirtualMachineInstance serve different lifecycle roles. Starting from a halted VM with a defined runStrategy, you start and stop the workload with virtctl. You observe when a VMI is created or removed and how status and events represent each transition. A lifecycle table records desired state, action, and observed result.

A boot image alone does not create a reproducibly provisioned VM. From an approved, internally mirrored Linux image, you create a DataVolume, observe the CDI import, and provide cloud-init data through a Secret. Import status, SSH access, and a marker inside the guest prove success. You distinguish image acquisition, persistent disk provisioning, and first-boot configuration.

VM networking connects KubeVirt interfaces with Kubernetes services and additional networks. On the masquerade pod network, you expose a sample application through a Service and test positive and negative NetworkPolicy cases. You inspect a separately prepared Multus attachment only as a guided path, without assuming identical policy behavior. A connectivity matrix records paths and results.

The storage configuration determines whether VM data survives a VMI replacement. You attach a prepared PVC-backed disk, write a marker inside the guest, and replace the running VMI. After restart, the marker proves that the data survived. By inspecting the StorageClass, access mode, and CSI capabilities, you separate general Kubernetes storage behavior from additional migration and snapshot requirements.

A VM can remain Pending even when its manifest is valid. In a prepared misconfiguration, you distinguish guest resources from virtualization overhead and trace the cause through scheduler events and the virt-launcher Pod. You then correct exactly one placement constraint or request. The target node, pod status, and resource view prove the expected running state.

Console, VNC, and port forwarding use distinct KubeVirt subresources and require narrowly scoped permissions. With a namespace-bound ServiceAccount, you first run kubectl auth can-i and observe an expected denial. You then narrow a prepared Role and its binding to the required action. A permission matrix records allowed and rejected access as evidence.

Live migration is suitable only for compatible VM, network, and storage configurations. You inspect the LiveMigratable condition, start continuous guest traffic, and trigger a migration with virtctl. The migration object, source and target nodes, and traffic log expose progress and observed interruption. You then connect the evidence to eviction strategy, maintenance planning, and handling non-migratable workloads.

A same-cluster snapshot is not automatically an independent backup. You write a marker inside the guest, create a VirtualMachineSnapshot backed by a CSI VolumeSnapshot, and inspect readiness plus guest-agent indications. After changing the workload, you restore the stopped VM and verify the marker. You then separate filesystem state, application consistency, backup, and disaster recovery.

Day-two operations connect desired state with observable behavior. Using a prepared controller and Git repository, you commit exactly one VM change and observe reconciliation. You then change the live state once outside Git on purpose. Using the Git diff, a condition or event, and one supplied KubeVirt metric, you isolate the discrepancy and add the relevant runbook entry. A short operator checklist records the workflow.

Frequently asked questions

No. The training introduces KubeVirt but requires practical Kubernetes experience. You should be able to inspect resources with kubectl, edit YAML, and understand pods, Services, events, CRDs, PVs, PVCs, and StorageClasses.

If you do not yet have these fundamentals, start with the Kubernetes Fundamentals Workshop. For additional practice with RBAC, scheduling, and persistent workloads, continue with the Kubernetes Advanced Workshop.

The KubeVirt training focuses on virtual machines as Kubernetes resources. You work with VirtualMachine, VirtualMachineInstance, CDI, VM networking, migration, and snapshot and restore operations.

The Kubernetes Advanced Workshop covers broader topics for containerized and stateful workloads, including scheduling, RBAC, networking, and scaling. Those skills provide a useful foundation for KubeVirt but are not taught again from the beginning in this training.

No. This training covers the upstream KubeVirt project and its Kubernetes APIs. Proxmox VE Fundamentals covers a separate virtualization platform with a different operating model. OpenShift Virtualization has a platform and lifecycle context specific to Red Hat.

The workshop therefore uses neither the Proxmox interface nor OpenShift-specific Operators or consoles. It focuses on KubeVirt APIs, their Kubernetes dependencies, and clearly stated operational boundaries. The KubeVirt training is not certification or exam preparation.

No. The cluster and required platform components are prepared. KubeVirt, CDI, Multus, the CNI, CSI storage, GitOps, and monitoring are available in a pinned training environment. This keeps the teaching time focused on VM lifecycle and operations.

You inspect the installed state and work directly with VM, networking, storage, and permission resources. Installation from an empty cluster and production platform design remain outside the two-day scope.

Yes, for a technical pre-assessment of selected VM workloads. Using a prepared Linux VM, you assess whether Kubernetes APIs, storage, networking, RBAC, live migration, restore, and a bounded GitOps workflow fit your operating model.

The training is not a production migration project. It does not include cost or licensing advice and makes no compatibility commitment. VMware import procedures, Windows image engineering, drivers, migration factory workflows, and implementation in your production environment are not included.

Every technical block ends with a verifiable result. You build an object map, provision a persistent VM, document networking and RBAC cases, correct a Pending VM, record the observed interruption during a live migration, and verify a restore.

The exercises run in the DevNinjas Dojo with prepared images and resettable resources. You work on the relevant manifests and diagnostics instead of spending workshop time on large downloads or platform installation.

No. A snapshot in the same cluster does not replace an independent backup or disaster recovery. In the workshop, you create a VirtualMachineSnapshot backed by a CSI VolumeSnapshot, inspect its status, and recover a known data marker.

You distinguish filesystem state, possible application consistency, and protection against cluster or site failures. KubeVirt backup APIs, external backup products, and multi-cluster recovery are not used in the practical exercises.

Our trainings usually take place from 9:00 to 16:00, both on-site and for public remote trainings.

For corporate trainings, other time models are flexible and can be worked out together.
