Workshop Details

What makes this workshop stand out

🎯What you will learn and take away

Four days, one goal: your Kubernetes observability stack runs production-ready.

  • Collect and query metrics with Prometheus: You install Prometheus via the Prometheus Operator and kube-prometheus-stack, write PromQL queries for instant, range, and vector queries, and instrument your own applications with custom metrics
  • Centralize logs with Loki and Grafana Alloy: You configure Grafana Alloy (the successor to Promtail) and analyze log data with LogQL, from simple filters to complex aggregations
  • Build dashboards, alerting, and SLOs: You create informative Grafana dashboards, configure the Prometheus Alertmanager, and define Service Level Objectives (SLOs) with concrete tools

All exercises take place in the DevNinjas Dojo, where each participant works on their own dedicated Kubernetes cluster. As a next step, we recommend the Kubernetes Security Workshop (DW7) or the Helm Workshop (DW9).

💼Why the investment pays off

If your team debugs incidents with kubectl logs and takes hours to find the root cause, the gap is not experience but tooling and methodology.

  • Reduce downtime: Prometheus alerting and SLOs make system stability measurable. Your team detects problems before they impact operations
  • Lower cloud costs: Through targeted performance tuning and capacity planning, you avoid overprovisioning. Metrics-based monitoring reveals where resources are wasted
  • Independence from commercial vendors: Prometheus, Grafana, and Loki are open-source CNCF projects with no usage-based billing, unlike Datadog or New Relic

Also available as corporate training for your ops or platform team. In our experience, your team will have a functioning monitoring stack in production within two weeks.

📋Prerequisites

Required:

  • Advanced Kubernetes knowledge (Deployments, Services, ConfigMaps, RBAC)
  • Experience administering Kubernetes clusters
  • Proficiency with the Linux command line
  • Basic YAML knowledge

Not required:

  • Monitoring experience (built from scratch in this workshop)
  • Knowledge of Prometheus, Grafana, or Loki

Our Kubernetes Introduction (DW2) and Advanced Kubernetes (DW3) provide the ideal preparation.

Workshop Agenda

Your Agenda at a Glance

Hands-on and structured. Every participant works in their own cloud environment. The agenda shows you what to expect each day.

09:00 - 09:30💬 Introduction Round
09:30 - 10:30

Kubernetes Monitoring: The Big Overview

Why do kubectl logs and kubectl top fall short once a cluster runs more than a handful of services? This module explains the difference between monitoring (what is happening?) and observability (why is it happening?) and introduces the stack you will build over the next four days: Prometheus for metrics, Grafana for visualization and alerting, Loki with Grafana Alloy for logs. By the end, you will have a clear picture of the architecture and understand which component handles which task.

10:30 - 11:30

kube-prometheus-stack and Prometheus Operator

You install the kube-prometheus-stack via Helm chart, which deploys Prometheus, Alertmanager, Grafana, Node Exporter, and kube-state-metrics in a single step. At its core is the included Prometheus Operator, whose Custom Resource Definitions (ServiceMonitor, PodMonitor, PrometheusRule) you then explore in detail. By the end, you configure automatic service discovery that detects new scrape targets as soon as a service is deployed.

11:30 - 12:00

Grafana Operator vs. Helm Chart Installation

The Grafana Operator manages dashboards and datasources as Kubernetes resources, ideal for GitOps workflows with ArgoCD or Flux. Installation via Helm chart is faster to set up but requires manual dashboard maintenance. You install both variants, import a dashboard via GrafanaDashboard CR and via ConfigMap, and then decide which approach fits your team.

Hands-on: First Metrics and Dashboard

Now it gets practical: you verify the scrape configuration of the Prometheus Operator, import a first dashboard into Grafana, and analyze CPU, RAM, and network metrics from your cluster. Along the way, you learn the four metric types (counter, gauge, histogram, summary) through real examples and understand when each type is the right choice.

Introduction to Logging with Loki

How does Loki collect logs without indexing them, and why does that make the stack so storage-efficient? You install Loki in your Kubernetes cluster, configure Grafana Alloy as the log collector, and see how log streams are structured, collected, and displayed in Grafana. The focus is on the architecture (Distributor, Ingester, Querier) and the interplay with Prometheus metrics.

Grafana Alloy: Migrating from Promtail

Promtail reaches its end-of-life on February 28, 2026. Grafana Alloy takes over as the unified telemetry collector for logs, metrics, and traces. You migrate an existing Promtail configuration to Alloy, use the built-in convert command, and configure initial pipeline stages for log transformation. Along the way, you see how Alloy's modular dataflow model and OpenTelemetry compatibility make it significantly more flexible than its predecessor.

"My colleagues specifically looked for a sysadmin course for Docker with another provider and had an instructor who only set up an IDE for them and then only worked on a task sheet with development tasks. I had a course with lots of background information, an instructor who had a really extensive knowledge of the whole subject matter beyond the slides, and I feel optimally informed."
