Workshop Details

What makes this workshop stand out

🎯

What you will learn and take away

In the Kubernetes Advanced Workshop, you'll deepen your skills for production-ready deployments:

  • Stateful Workloads: You'll operate PostgreSQL and Redis with Operators and learn StatefulSets for persistent applications
  • Security & Networking: You'll configure RBAC for access control, Network Policies for isolation, and learn the Gateway API 1.4 plus modern alternatives (Traefik, Caddy) to the classic Ingress API
  • Observability & Scaling: You'll set up Prometheus and Grafana for monitoring and implement HPA, VPA, and KEDA for automatic scaling

All labs in your own cloud environment. Perfect follow-up to Kubernetes Introduction (DW2) or ideal preparation for CKA Exam Prep (DW6) and CKAD Exam Prep (DW5).

💼

Why the investment pays off

Production outages due to inadequate Kubernetes security or inefficient resource usage cost your company time and money. Our Kubernetes Advanced training equips your team with the necessary skills:

  • Reduce costs: HPA, VPA, and KEDA for automatic scaling reduce infrastructure costs by up to 40% through demand-based resource allocation
  • Avoid downtime: RBAC, Network Policies, and monitoring with Prometheus increase cluster security and reduce security incidents
  • Accelerate deployment: Operators for databases and best practices for stateful workloads shorten rollout times and minimize manual errors

Small groups (max. 8 participants) guarantee individual coaching for your specific use cases.

📋

Prerequisites

This course is based on our Kubernetes Introduction (DW2) course, so you should already be familiar with its contents. Alternatively, you can participate if you are familiar with the topics of the "Kubernetes for Beginners" workshop and have extensive experience with Kubernetes. This workshop is aimed at advanced users, DevOps engineers, developers, or administrators who are already working with Kubernetes.

Workshop Agenda

Your Agenda at a Glance

Hands-on and structured. Every participant works in their own cloud environment. The agenda shows you what to expect each day.

Day 1: Databases, resource management, and network configuration

4 topics
09:00–09:30💬 Introduction Round

You operate databases in Kubernetes efficiently and in line with best practices for production use. You understand the concept of the StatefulSet for persistent workloads and manage your databases via the Kubernetes API.

kubernetesKubernetes

You implement Kubernetes Operators for PostgreSQL and Redis and learn the advantages and disadvantages of operators. Step by step, you set up and configure operators so they simplify and automate the operation of your databases.

postgresqlPostgreSQLredisRedis
12:00–13:00🥪 Lunch Break

You distribute resources in Kubernetes optimally and choose the right scheduling algorithm. You understand how Kubernetes places applications on Nodes and maximize application performance as a result. For specific workload types, you work with DaemonSets and Job Controllers.

You'll learn the Gateway API 1.4 as the modern successor to the Ingress API and understand the differences (HTTPRoute and Gateway instead of classic Ingress):

  • Ingress controller alternatives: Traefik with Kubernetes-native service discovery and Caddy with automatic HTTPS (zero config), both with Gateway API support
  • Service mesh: Istio (comprehensive features) compared to Linkerd (lightweight)
  • Isolation: Network Policies to secure your Pods

16:00–16:30💭 Questions & Answers

Day 2: Monitoring, security, and auto-scaling

4 topics
09:00–09:30💭 Questions & Answers

You set up metric monitoring for Kubernetes: Prometheus collects metrics and Grafana visualizes them in dashboards. You use the operators for Prometheus and Grafana to run the stack declaratively and maintainably, and learn which cluster metrics really matter in operations.

prometheusPrometheusgrafanaGrafana

You extend the stack with centralized logging using Loki and aggregate logs from across the cluster in one place. You then set up alerting basics so your team is automatically notified of problems before users notice them.

lokiLoki
12:00–13:00🥪 Lunch Break

You implement roles and permissions with Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and isolate workloads via Network Policies. This way, you protect your applications and clusters from attacks and secure your entire environment.

You'll learn three scaling strategies: Horizontal Pod Autoscaler (HPA) for horizontal scaling based on CPU/memory, Vertical Pod Autoscaler (VPA) for automatic resource adjustment, and KEDA (Kubernetes Event-Driven Autoscaling) for event-based scaling with scale-to-zero. You'll create custom metrics and configure autoscalers for production workloads. Maximize resource efficiency and reduce costs through intelligent scaling.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, if you understand the fundamental concepts such as Pods, Deployments, Services, and ConfigMaps, you are well prepared. Ideally, you have completed our Kubernetes introduction course (DW2) or have equivalent hands-on experience with Kubernetes.

This workshop covers important CKA topics (RBAC, networking, scheduling, storage, monitoring), but is not designed as dedicated exam preparation. For targeted CKA preparation, we recommend our CKA Workshop (DW6), which covers all exam objectives and includes practical exam simulations.

The workshop is highly hands-on: You work in your own cloud-based Kubernetes environment and implement all learned concepts yourself. Each section combines brief theory introduction with hands-on labs. You leave the course with concrete configurations and manifests you can use directly in your projects.

Operators are covered hands-on: You'll learn how to set up and configure PostgreSQL and Redis operators. Helm is briefly introduced. For in-depth Helm knowledge, we recommend our dedicated Helm Workshop (DW9), which comprehensively covers chart development and best practices.

Gateway API is the modern successor to Ingress, offering more flexibility, better role separation, and native support for advanced traffic routing scenarios. Ingress remains relevant for simple HTTP routing use cases. In the workshop, you'll learn both approaches and understand when Gateway API is the better choice.

All practical exercises take place in the DevNinjas Dojo, our browser-based cloud learning environment. Every participant receives dedicated resources: own Kubernetes clusters, VMs, containers (depending on the workshop topic). You work not in a shared environment, but have full control over your own infrastructure.

Benefits:

  • Your own clusters & servers: You get dedicated resources for your exercises
  • No software installation required: Everything runs in your browser
  • Works everywhere: Even in strict enterprise networks with VPN, proxy, and firewalls
  • Open protocols: SSH, HTTPS, standardized web terminals (no proprietary client)
  • Ready immediately: Login and start with the exercise right away

You only need a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and internet access. The Dojo is available to you throughout the entire workshop.

Yes, upon completion you will receive an official certificate of attendance from DevNinjas as PDF. This confirms your successful participation and the topics covered. The certificate is perfect for conversations with your employer and your personnel file.

Additionally, you will receive a verified digital badge that you can directly embed in your LinkedIn profile (section "Licenses & Certifications"). The badge follows the Open Badges 2.0 standard and is verifiable via QR code at any time. This way you showcase your qualification and position yourself with recruiters.

Yes, all our workshops are also available as corporate training. We tailor content, duration and focus to the needs of your team.

Corporate trainings take place either on-site or remote. Submit your individual request and we will prepare an offer for you.
