What makes this workshop stand out

🎯

What you will learn and take away

After two days of Docker training, you will work confidently with containers. Here is what you take home:

  • Build your own Docker images with Dockerfiles and keep them lean using multi-stage builds
  • Set up and manage multi-container environments with Docker Compose
  • Understand networking and volumes and configure them for your projects

All exercises run in our cloud environment. No local setup, no hassle. You take working code home with you.

Want to continue? Our Kubernetes fundamentals training picks up right where this one ends, or save with the Docker + Kubernetes bundle (DW4).

💼

Value for your team

Without standardized container processes, your team loses time on environment issues instead of building features. This Docker training changes that:

  • No more "works on my machine": Standardized Dockerfiles and Compose setups ensure everyone on the team uses the same environment
  • Faster releases: Your team can independently build, test, and deploy containers
  • Cut onboarding from weeks to days: New hires start with a single docker compose up instead of days of manual setup

Small groups of up to 8 participants, so we can address questions from your specific project context.

📋

Prerequisites

Required:

  • Basic Linux knowledge and experience with the terminal
  • Comfortable working in a text editor or IDE

Not required:

  • Programming skills (this training is also suitable for admins and DevOps engineers)
  • Prior experience with Docker or containers

Workshop Agenda

Your Agenda at a Glance

Hands-on and structured. Every participant works in their own cloud environment. The agenda shows you what to expect each day.

Day 1: Understand Docker, install it, and launch your first containers

7 topics
09:00–10:00💬 Introduction Round

You will learn Docker's architecture: daemon, CLI, images, and containers. By the end of this block, you will understand how Docker works under the hood and how containers differ from virtual machines.

dockerDocker

Through concrete examples, you will see where Docker accelerates development processes and where its limitations lie. You will compare Docker with alternatives like Podman and assess when containers are the right approach.

You will install Docker in your cloud environment, check the running configuration, and familiarize yourself with the key settings. Afterward, you can set up Docker independently on any Linux system.

12:00–13:00🥪 Lunch Break

You will pull images from Docker Hub, inspect their layer structure, and push your own image to a registry. Along the way, you will learn how Docker Scout and Trivy help you detect vulnerabilities in images before they go to production. You will compare both scanners and understand their strengths.

dockerDockertrivyTrivy

You will start, stop, and delete containers using docker run, ps, logs, and exec. By the end, you will confidently navigate running containers and inspect their state in real time.

You will create bridge and host networks, connect containers to each other, and test the communication between them. This way, you will understand how Docker networking works and when to use which network type.

You will compare bind mounts, named volumes, and tmpfs mounts, create a volume, and verify that data survives a container restart. Afterward, you will know how to store data persistently in Docker and when tmpfs is the better choice for temporary, security-sensitive data.

16:00–16:30💭 Questions & Answers

Day 2: Build custom images and orchestrate multi-service applications

8 topics
09:00–09:30💭 Questions & Answers

You will write your first Dockerfile, build an image from it, and start a container. Along the way, you will learn the basic syntax and Docker's build process.

You will work with COPY, ADD, RUN, ENTRYPOINT, CMD, EXPOSE, VOLUME, and WORKDIR and understand when to use which command. By the end, you can read and write Dockerfiles and explain the differences between ENTRYPOINT and CMD.

You will build an image with multiple stages, analyze it layer by layer with Dive, and see how drastically multi-stage builds shrink your images. Then you will create a distroless image that contains only the application, with no shell and no package manager. Using Dive, you identify wasted space.

dockerDocker

A secure Dockerfile keeps its build context small, uses the layer cache deliberately, and starts the container with as few privileges as possible. You inspect a prepared example with Hadolint, fix the reported USER finding, shrink the build context with .dockerignore, and rebuild the image. You then compare build output, cache use, and the container UID with the original and explain the difference.

dockerDocker
12:00–13:00🥪 Lunch Break

YAML represents configuration through indentation, keys, and lists; even small formatting errors can change its meaning. You read a short compose.yaml, add nested values, and check how Docker Compose interprets the structure. This helps you spot incorrect indentation early and follow the Compose configuration used in the next module.

You will write your first compose.yaml using current Compose v5 syntax (the deprecated version field is no longer needed), start multiple containers with a single command, and learn the key Compose CLI commands (up, down, logs, ps). Afterward, managing multiple services will be as easy as a single container.

You will configure networks and volumes directly in compose.yaml, define dependencies between services, and control startup order with depends_on and healthchecks. This brings together everything you have learned over the two days.

You will set up a complete application consisting of database, backend, frontend, and load balancer in Docker Compose. By the end, you will have a working stack that you can use as a template for your own projects.

"My colleagues specifically looked for a sysadmin course for Docker with another provider and had an instructor who only set up an IDE for them and then only worked on a task sheet with development tasks. I had a course with lots of background information, an instructor who had a really extensive knowledge of the whole subject matter beyond the slides, and I feel optimally informed."

"In the workshop the most important Docker and Kubernetes topics were put together, prepared and explained superbly. The exercises fit precisely and were very well chosen in terms of difficulty. I am very satisfied with how much I learned in the five days and feel well prepared for upcoming tasks at work. Sure, you can teach yourself a lot on your own with AI tools, but without the workshop I would not have gained this overview or worked through so many exercises independently."

Frequently asked questions

No, you do not need programming skills. Basic Linux terminal knowledge is sufficient to follow along. The workshop is designed to be hands-on, so you can apply everything directly in the cloud environment we provide.

Docker is a container runtime for creating and running individual containers. Kubernetes is an orchestration tool that manages many containers in a cluster. In this workshop, you learn Docker as the foundation. If you want to go deeper afterward, check out our Kubernetes introductory workshop.

Docker and Podman are both OCI-compatible container engines. The main difference is in architecture: Docker uses a central daemon process, while Podman is daemonless (rootless), which is considered more secure. Both use containerd as the runtime.

Licensing: Docker Desktop is free only for small businesses (fewer than 250 employees and under USD 10 million in annual revenue). Larger organizations and government entities need a Docker subscription: USD 9 to 24 per user per month depending on the plan (as of July 2026). Podman is Apache 2.0 licensed with no license fees. Podman is CLI-compatible with Docker, so your skills transfer directly. We also offer a separate Podman workshop.

After the workshop, you can independently create containers, optimize images, and run multi-service applications with Docker Compose. In your development workflow, you will use these skills to standardize development environments, automate builds, and test services locally.

Note: Docker Desktop is optimized for development (runs on Windows/Mac with WSL2/VM). For production use, we recommend Linux servers with Docker Engine or a switch to container orchestration. Next steps: Kubernetes introduction (DW2) or Docker + Kubernetes bundle (DW4) at a package price.

You will learn the fundamentals for daily Docker work in our two-day workshop: creating containers, optimizing images, writing Dockerfiles, using Docker Compose. Afterwards, you can work productively and containerize applications. You won't be a Docker expert after two days, but you will master the core concepts. Deeper expertise (network tuning, security hardening, production monitoring) comes with practice in your own projects.

Yes. Docker is the industry standard for containers, used by over 59% of professional developers (Stack Overflow Developer Survey). Container skills are now a baseline requirement for cloud and DevOps roles. Your Docker CLI knowledge transfers directly to Podman and containerd if your organization switches later. The typical next step after Docker is Kubernetes: our Kubernetes introduction builds directly on this workshop.

Docker Engine is open source and free, including for commercial use. Docker Desktop (the GUI for Mac and Windows) has required a paid Docker subscription since 2022 for companies with more than 250 employees or over USD 10 million in annual revenue, and for government entities: Pro from USD 9 per user per month with annual billing, Team USD 15, Business USD 24 (as of July 2026). In our workshop, you work with Docker Engine in a cloud environment, so Desktop licensing is not a concern for the course.

All practical exercises take place in the DevNinjas Dojo, our browser-based cloud learning environment. Every participant receives dedicated resources: own Kubernetes clusters, VMs, containers (depending on the workshop topic). You work not in a shared environment, but have full control over your own infrastructure.

Benefits:

  • Your own clusters & servers: You get dedicated resources for your exercises
  • No software installation required: Everything runs in your browser
  • Works everywhere: Even in strict enterprise networks with VPN, proxy, and firewalls
  • Open protocols: SSH, HTTPS, standardized web terminals (no proprietary client)
  • Ready immediately: Login and start with the exercise right away

You only need a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge) and internet access. The Dojo is available to you throughout the entire workshop.

Yes, upon completion you will receive an official certificate of attendance from DevNinjas as PDF. This confirms your successful participation and the topics covered. The certificate is perfect for conversations with your employer and your personnel file.

Additionally, you will receive a verified digital badge that you can directly embed in your LinkedIn profile (section "Licenses & Certifications"). The badge follows the Open Badges 2.0 standard and is verifiable via QR code at any time. This way you showcase your qualification and position yourself with recruiters.

Our public trainings are currently not eligible for a Bildungsgutschein (education voucher from the Federal Employment Agency or Jobcenter), as we do not hold an AZAV provider accreditation.

For employees, there are often employer-side funding options instead: many companies cover the training costs directly, and under the German Qualifizierungschancengesetz employers can receive subsidies for upskilling their staff. Get in touch and we will gladly provide the documents you need for your employer.
