Day 1: Understand Rancher, install it, and provision your first clusters

What exactly does Rancher add on top of vanilla Kubernetes, and how does it compare to OpenShift? This module maps the Rancher ecosystem: Rancher Manager, RKE2, K3s, Fleet, Longhorn, and Rancher Desktop. You will understand which component solves which problem and how they work together. By the end, you will know when Rancher is the right choice and where its boundaries are.

You install Rancher Manager via Helm on an existing Kubernetes cluster in your own cloud environment. Along the way, you configure cert-manager for TLS certificates, set up the initial admin access, and verify the installation through the dashboard. After this block, your own Rancher Manager is running and ready to manage clusters.

Rancher ships two Kubernetes distributions: RKE2 (enterprise, security-focused) and K3s (lightweight, edge). You set up both distributions side by side, comparing installation process, resource footprint, and default components (e.g. containerd, Canal vs. Flannel). By the end, you can make an informed decision about which distribution fits which use case.

Now it gets multi-cluster: you create a new downstream cluster directly through the Rancher UI and import an existing cluster into your Rancher Manager. You learn the difference between provisioned and imported clusters, work with Cloud Credentials, and see how Rancher centrally manages the cluster lifecycle (creation, scaling, deletion).

Where do you find what in Rancher? This module gets you comfortable with the Cluster Explorer, the built-in kubectl shell, the cross-cluster dashboard, and the project/namespace structure. You navigate through your provisioned clusters, compare resources, and learn keyboard shortcuts that speed up daily work.

You deploy Deployments, StatefulSets, DaemonSets, and Jobs through both the Rancher UI and the kubectl shell. Along the way, you configure resource limits, ConfigMaps, and Secrets directly in the Cluster Explorer. Comparing both approaches shows when the UI is faster and when kubectl remains the better choice.

How does Rancher make Kubernetes networking more accessible? You create Services (ClusterIP, NodePort, LoadBalancer), configure an Ingress Controller, and set up Network Policies for namespace isolation. All through the Rancher UI, with a look at the generated YAML manifests underneath.

Longhorn is Rancher's own distributed block storage solution, installable directly from the app marketplace. You set up Longhorn, create PersistentVolumes, attach them to workloads, and test snapshots and backups. Afterward, you understand how Longhorn replicates data across nodes and when it serves as an alternative to cloud storage providers.

Rancher provides its own role and permission system that goes beyond Kubernetes RBAC. You create cluster roles and project roles, assign permissions to users, and connect an external auth provider (e.g. LDAP, Active Directory, or OIDC). By the end, you can give different teams targeted access to their clusters and namespaces.

Rancher bundles commonly used tools in an app marketplace with preconfigured Helm charts. You install an application from the marketplace, register your own Helm repository, and manage chart versions through the UI. This block connects your Helm knowledge with the Rancher workflow and shows how teams deploy applications in a standardized way.

Fleet is Rancher's built-in GitOps engine and the key to consistent deployments across multiple clusters. You connect a Git repository to Fleet, define bundle configurations, and roll out an application to two downstream clusters simultaneously. Changes in Git trigger automatic updates. By the end of this block, you operate a working GitOps setup that spans multiple clusters.

Rancher ships an integrated monitoring stack based on Prometheus and Grafana, installable with two clicks from the marketplace. You enable monitoring, explore the preinstalled dashboards for cluster and workload metrics, and configure a first alert. The focus is on the Rancher workflow, not on deep PromQL (for that, see our Observability workshop).

Production means: what happens when things go wrong? You install the Rancher Backup Operator, create etcd snapshots, and restore a backup on a cluster. Then you perform a Kubernetes version upgrade of a downstream cluster through the Rancher UI and observe the rolling update process. After this block, you know the steps for safe Day-2 operations.

You configure Pod Security Admission (PSA) with its three profiles Privileged, Baseline, and Restricted, and watch live as Rancher blocks insecure pods. Additionally, you set up Network Policies to restrict traffic between namespaces. This module gives you the fundamentals for a hardened cluster setup without going beyond the scope of an introductory workshop.

Yes, basic Kubernetes knowledge is required. You should be familiar with Pods, Deployments, Services, and Namespaces, and be comfortable using kubectl. Rancher experience is not required, we build that from scratch.

Preparation: Our Kubernetes fundamentals training (DW2) provides the ideal foundation. It covers exactly the concepts we build upon in the Rancher workshop.

Kubernetes is the container orchestration platform, Rancher is the management layer on top. Kubernetes provides the infrastructure (Pods, Services, Volumes), while Rancher adds what Kubernetes lacks:

  • A central UI for multiple clusters simultaneously
  • Integrated user management with RBAC and LDAP/Active Directory integration
  • An app marketplace with preconfigured Helm charts
  • GitOps via Fleet for automated multi-cluster deployments
  • Dedicated components like Longhorn (storage) and RKE2/K3s (Kubernetes distributions)

In short: Kubernetes runs containers, Rancher makes operating multiple Kubernetes clusters manageable. Our Kubernetes fundamentals workshop (DW2) teaches the K8s foundation, this workshop shows how Rancher builds on it.

Rancher plays to its strengths with two groups in particular: teams with multi-cluster needs and teams that want to rely on open source.

Multi-cluster across different environments: Rancher runs on top of existing CNCF-compliant clusters and lets you choose the distribution (RKE2, K3s, or cloud-managed). You manage on-premises, cloud, and edge clusters from a single interface and also import managed cloud clusters (AKS, EKS, GKE). OpenShift, by contrast, is its own distribution that replaces vanilla Kubernetes.

Open source instead of a subscription: Rancher Manager is open source (Apache 2.0) and free even in production. OpenShift requires a Red Hat subscription. If you need flexibility in infrastructure and licensing, Rancher is usually the better fit.

OpenShift shines where a closed platform with integrated CI/CD and the Red Hat ecosystem is required. In the workshop, we compare the architectural differences so you can make an informed decision.

Rancher Manager is open source (Apache 2.0) and free to use, including in production. Rancher Prime is SUSE's enterprise offering with commercial support, extended security features, and certified builds.

In practice: For getting started and many production scenarios, the open-source version is sufficient. Rancher Prime becomes relevant when you need SLAs for support, require FIPS-certified builds, or your compliance team demands a vendor contract. The features are identical; the difference lies in support and certification.

In the workshop, we work with the open-source variant and show where Rancher Prime adds value. This way, you can make an informed internal case for whether your team needs the open-source or enterprise version.

Yes, Rancher can import and centrally manage both self-provisioned clusters and managed cloud clusters (AKS, EKS, GKE). You configure Cloud Credentials in Rancher, import the cluster, and manage workloads, RBAC, and monitoring through the same interface as your on-premises clusters.

This is one of the key advantages for teams with hybrid or multi-cloud setups: a unified management interface regardless of whether the cluster runs on AWS, Azure, GCP, or in your own data center. In the workshop, you practice both provisioning new clusters and importing existing clusters into your Rancher Manager.

Both are Kubernetes distributions from Rancher/SUSE, but with different focus areas:

RKE2 is the enterprise distribution focused on security and compliance: FIPS 140-2 support, CIS hardening out of the box, Canal as default CNI. Typical use: regulated environments, data centers, production.

K3s is lightweight (single binary, ~100 MB RAM), uses Flannel as default CNI, and is suited for edge scenarios, IoT, CI/CD runners, and smaller environments.

Commonalities: Both are CNCF-certified, use containerd as runtime, and can be centrally managed through Rancher Manager. In the workshop, you set up both distributions and compare installation process, resource footprint, and bundled components. This way, you can make an informed decision in your projects about which distribution fits which scenario.

All practical exercises take place in the DevNinjas Dojo, our browser-based cloud learning environment. Every participant receives dedicated resources: own Kubernetes clusters, VMs, containers (depending on the workshop topic). You work not in a shared environment, but have full control over your own infrastructure.
